Hannah Montana’s School of Theology

Miley Cyrus weighed in this week on the Miss USA/Miss California controversy (more info on that here) with a little bit of scripture knowledge, and I do mean a little (place rimshot here). Here is what she tweeted Perez Hilton ” “jesus loves you AND your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! thats like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz hes gay” and “gods greatest commandment is to love. and judging is not loving.” She went on to tell him that she hope to be at his and his partners wedding.
It is truely admirable that Miley is sharing the love of God with Perez, and it is true that God loves him no matter where he is in his life. God loves. He loves so much that he sent His only Son. But in John 7:24 Jesus tells us to “judge with righteous judgement”. And in God’s righteousness He created man and woman and said that was good. Miley needs to understand what love is, what perfect love is. Jesus said the greatest commandment is not just to love, but to love the LORD with all you are. You can’t love God and excuse sin. God is love, so let’s define love by a righteous God not define God by our depraved understanding of love.
I’m glad she told Perez that God loves him, maybe nobody ever has and actually meant it. I just wish she would have told him that God loves him so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, so that he could experience love, perfect love, forgiveness and newness of life. I hope that he really begins to look into God’s love as revealed in scripture and discovers that God showed His love to us in that while we were still in sin Christ died for us. That is love. All have sinned and all need that love.
