Go For The Gold!

(memory verse) Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

The Olympics just wrapped up. The most watched event in history. We saw Phelps set records. Saw the fastest man in the world. And were awed by the spectacle of the opening ceremonies.
Paul compared our Christian journey to an Olympic event. A race. A marathon. It’s a long road, but lets look at some things Coach Paul used to motivate us.

STAY FOCUSED> throw off everything that hinders
What weighs you down? What keeps you from reaching higher?
(Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.)
GOD has called you. Heavenward. UP! Not down. HE has called you to lift you up. He has plans for you. To lift you out of the lies and defeat of this world. This world is not your home. You’re just racing thru.

BE ALERT > there is a sin that easily entangles you.
(Galatians 5:7 You were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the truth?)
Don’t let sin cut in on you and disqualify you from the race. There is a sin, an act of disobedience, that you are prone to. Avoid it. No that it is stalking you. On your heels. Breathing down your neck. But you have been freed from the curse of sin. Run. Run. Run.

DON’T GIVE UP > run with perseverance
(Acts 20:24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.)
Finish the race. Jesus is longing to welcome you to the winner’s podium. To give you your crown. To say “Well done good and faithful child”. You will get tired. You will want to give up. You will question whether or not it is worth all the effort and sacrifice. It is worth it. Don’t give up.

WE’RE CHEERING FOR YOU > a great cloud of witnesses
(HEB 11. The Hall of FAITH.)
They have gone before you. They understand the race. They know you can do it, because they did it. Because Jesus did IT. For the joy set before Him, He did IT. For the prize at the end of the race, He ran it. The prize? The Father’s glory. And our salvation. He ran the race for himself, but He also ran it for those that would follow him. Why do we run? For the Father’s glory. And for those that come after us. Run.

Go for the GOLD!
